Hickey said that’s not the case with him. When hunters kill a buck of a lifetime, they often say it ruins hunting for them because they will probably never see another to rival it, and they’ll refuse to ever kill a smaller one. “You’ve got to put in time scouting, and you’ve got to have a little bit of luck.” “A person has got to have patience and has got to let young deer walk,” Hickey said. In fact, he spent so much time hunting that his partners with whom he owns the property confronted him with suspicions he was using the lodge for an extramarital affair. He spent many hours scouting and hunting. Like Hickey’s buck, though, they won’t come easy. “I feel confident there will be several Boone & Crocketts to come out of Little River County in years to come.” “The reality is that we have good genetics in Little River County, and the 3-point rule has done a lot to get some age on our deer down there,” Hickey said. The Boone and Crockett Club in Missoula, Mont., examined it and determined it was a 4x4, so Doughty started there. “When I first saw that deer, my first thought was, ‘Oh, my God!’” Doughty said.ĭoughty said it was challenging just figuring out how to classify the rack. The name comes from their shape, a veritable fountain of points that resemble a starburst. To give it a fighting chance, he sought the services of Dan Doughty of Mobile, Ala., because of his extensive experience scoring“starburst” racks. Initially, Hickey believed the buck might challenge Dooley’s record. The Arkansas state-record for a non-typical, killed in 1999 by Bill Dooley in Prairie Co., scored 238 3/8. A non-typical rack must score at least 195 to make B&C’s all-time awards book. It’s the fourth largest non-typical ever killed in Arkansas, and also the fourth largest in terms of exceeding the minimum standards for recognition by the Boone &Crockett Club. The buck sported a distinctive non-typical “starburst” rack that scored 229 5/8 Boone and Crockett points. LITTLE ROCK - In a “starburst” finish, Jay Hickey of Texarkana won the 2012 Arkansas Big Buck Classic with a white tailed deer he killed in Little River County during the 2011 modern gun season.
